PINTADOS PETROGLYPHS – HALF DAY

We leave early in the morning heading to the Pan-American Highway to head south and meet the impressive Geoglifos de Pintados, an important example of monumental rock art, more than 1500 years old that has been preserved due to the scarce rain in the desert of Atacama. Here we will find more than 400 outstanding figures in the hills due to the technique of contrasting the colors of the earth by scraping or accumulating rocks in approximately 6 kms of slopes. These manifestations of pre-Columbian art can be appreciated at a distance because they were intended to be visualized by caravans of merchants who exchanged products from the Pacific coast to beyond the Andes. They represent zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, and geometric forms.
